GALENA, Kan. — GALENA, Kan. - Neva L. Dugan passed away Thursday March 7, 2013, at St. Lukes Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.

Neva was born on Aug. 17, 1936, to Roy and Sarah Maxine (Shira) Merrill. She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Kenneth Merrill; and one sister, Wilma June Frazier.

She married Forrest Dugan on Aug. 21, 1954, in Miami, Okla. They have three children, Kim (Chris) Jennings, of Neosho, Mo.; Sara (Robert) Vaughan, of Baxter Springs, Kan. and Forrest Wayne Dugan, of Galena, Kan. Additional Survivors include four grandchildren, Jason (Chas) Bryant, of Silver Creek, Mo., Missy (Andy) Bowers, of Neosho, Mo., Larica (Tony) Higginbotham, of Pittsburg, Kan., Chelsea Dava Marbut, of Baxter Springs, Kan.; eight great-grandchildren, Jaci Bryant, Mercedes Moon, Cortlyn Hendricks, Baylie and Wade Bowers, Tiandra, Taygun, and Laibrey Higginbotham; and three step-granddaughters, Sara Piepho, Jennifer Vaughan, and Mia Moss.

She loved all animals. She adopted every cat and dog that people dropped off on her corner, and found homes for the ones she couldn't keep.

She retired from Oasis Car Wash in 2001, and was currently employed at Emeral Pointe Health and Rehab.

A Graveside Service will take place Monday March 11, at 3 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, Kan., Pastor Jeff D. Martin will officiate. Honorary Pallbearers will be Robert Hughes, Chris Jennings, Robert Vaughan, Andy Bower, David Marbut, and Elmer Walker. The family will receive friends on Sunday March 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joplin Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
