The Joplin Globe

Claude Edward Robinson, 85, of Grove, Okla., passed away on Oct. 8, 2012.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, Okla., from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012. Services will be Thursday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. at First Christian Church, Miami, with Leon Weece officiating. Burial will be in G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home.

Claude was born in Baxter Springs, Kan., Dec. 28, 1926, to the late Matthew W. Robinson and Opal Day Robinson.

Just after World War II he met the love of his life, Jean Shelton. They married in 1946, and had their 66th wedding anniversary this past June.

Claude was a member of the Miami Fire Department prior to opening Robinson Sign Company in Miami, which he owned and operated until 1970. He was a master neon glass bender and always conducted his business life with honesty and integrity. After his days as a "sign man", he and Jean traveled 49 of the 50 states in their Airstream.

Claude was a member of "The Greatest Generation". He joined the Navy in 1943, serving in World War II on the troop transport ship, U.S.S. DuPage. Just four days out from San Diego, while carrying troops for the Japanese invasion, the bomb was dropped and ended the war. The DuPage continued on to Nagoya, Japan. Claude would remain on the ship until April 1946, when he would help decommission it at Pier 42 in New York City.

Claude was blessed with a wonderful family and nothing was more important to him than nurturing that family. He was always full of sage advice for his children and grandchildren, which he delivered with quintessential wit and wisdom. His best days were spent fishing with his sons, grandsons and buddies.

Claude was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Doyle and Dan Robinson; his son-in-law, Dr. Mitchell Willens; and a granddaughter, Whitley Robinson.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; sister-in-law, Lavern Robinson; his daughter, Linda Barr and husband, Tom, of Tulsa; his daughter, Claudia Corky Willens, of Tyler, Texas; his son, Sam Robinson and wife, Terry, of Grove; his son, Mark Robinson and wife, Kim, of Miami; five grandsons, Chris, Bryan, Erick, Josh and Zach; two granddaughters, Donna and Shanna; and one great-grandson, Blake.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great-grandson.

Memorials may be sent to a charity of your choice.
