JASPER, Mo. —
Martha Louise Teeter Bullard, 87, passed away Feb. 25, 2013, in Lamar, Mo.
Martha was born in Jasper, Mo., to the late Charles J. and Harriet L. Teeter. She graduated from Jasper High School and attended Drury College and Park College before marriage to Darryl B. Patterson of Jasper in 1947. She briefly taught in the Lamar public schools before the birth of her son Gregory A. Patterson in 1950. Martha lived her entire life in the Jasper community except for residencies during her marriage to Darryl and his career in business.
Martha and Greg returned to Jasper in 1963, where they lived her mother, Hattie. She renewed her career working for Stewards in Carthage, Dr. Barlett in his original dental office in Jasper, and Dr. Langford in Jasper, before joining Ward Publishing where she eventually became editor of the Jasper County News. Martha will be remembered by the Jasper community for her work at the newspaper as a writer and photographer chronicalizing the life of Jasper and it's families, businesses, school and nearby communities. Her passion for family and community history led her to be known informally as the historian of Jasper. For years people on a search or with a question about family or town history would find their way to the phone or open door of Martha. She also assisted many other historical researchers and did much of the research for Marvin Van Gilder in the 1976 publication of "Jasper City Hometown U.S.A.", a centennial history of Jasper. She wrote countless stories and articles related to Jasper history and collected photographs and written works, many of which have been or will be placed in the archives of Barton and Jasper counties.
In 1972, she married Howard U. Bullard and moved to a farm four miles north of Jasper. Red as he was known died in 1988. With her marriage to Red she gained a second child, stepdaughter, Marlyn Blair and two grandchildren, Sean Blair and Elaine Lindsay.
As an accomplished vocalist and amateur music director, Martha sang and played piano all of her life, though her fear of performance held her back, music was a central part of her life. Martha had many interests and with her marriage to Red, that came to include helping manage the farm. Upon Red's retirement and death, the Tidball family both purchased and rented parts of the farm. Red and Martha traveled extensively, especially to Western Oklahoma, Red's original home area. Besides historical artifacts, Martha had many collections of sentimental items of family and community and a substantial collection of early postcards.
She was a lifelong member of the Jasper United Methodist Church and a member of the Jasper Chamber of Commerce, Jasper Business and Professional Women and the Jasper All School Reunion.
In 1988, her son, Greg, married Beth Burnett and they blessed her with two grandchildren, Benton Warner and Katherine Patterson.
The product of mid 19th century families who settled Jasper and Dade counties, Martha was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold L. and Marvin Teeter.
She is survived by her son, Greg and wife, Beth and their children, Ben and Katie, of Kansas City, Mo. Her stepdaughter, Marlyn and her daughter, Elaine Lindsay and husband, Keith, of Harriman, Tenn., and son, Sean Blair, of Sutton, Alaska.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 4, at the Jasper United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery, south of Jasper. The body may be viewed at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Jasper United Methodist Church or the Jasper All School Reunion in care of the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Weng Funeral Chapel Jasper.
