CARTERVILLE, Mo. —
Leslie Carl Deverick, U.S.N. Retired, age 90, of Carterville, Mo., passed away at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at his home following a two year illness.
Les was born Dec. 31, 1922, the son of Coy and Julia Redic Deverick, in Walton, W.Va. He came to Carterville in 1976, after spending a total of 34 ½ years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a Senior Chief Engineman. His service included World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Les was a member of the Baptist Church, a life member of the American Legion and a former Carterville City Councilman. Les also attended Long Beach City College, and Missouri Southern State College.
Les married Norma Lee Clark Feb. 26, 1960, in Elkview, W.Va. She preceded him in death on June 14, 1992.
He was also preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Donna Norris; one brother, Eugene Deverick; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Clyde Clark; and two nephews, Tom and John Clark.
Survivors include a son, James L. Johnson, state of California; one sister, Dorothy Bader, Scott Depot, W.Va.; one brother, Paul Deverick, state of Geroria; two granddaughters, Debra Divis and Joann Thompson and husband, Bruce, all of Mesa, Ariz.; five great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Marilyn Clark, Webb City, Mo.; and three nephews, Keith Jackson and wife, Barbara, St. Albans, W.Va., Robert Bader and wife, Mary, Crosslines, W.Va., and Timothy Bader and wife, Nicki, Winfield, W.Va.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hedge-Lewis Chapel with Randy L. Wilson, Minister, officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
Memorial contributions are requested to the Carterville Park Association in care of the funeral home.
