JOPLIN, MO —
Sharon K. Ferneau, 71, a lifelong resident of Joplin, Mo., passed away from a sudden illness with her family at her side on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012.
Sharon was born on Nov. 12, 1940, in Joplin, and was the daughter of the late Carl W. Sanders and Dorothy K. (Hallam) Sanders, of Joplin. Sharon graduated with Honors from Joplin High School in 1958, and attended Joplin Junior College, now MSSU.
Sharon started her career at the Sanders Agency and worked there for several years providing insurance, real estate and personal loans. In the early 1970s, Sharon purchased the business from her father and became one of the first female insurance brokers in the country. Over a period of years she expanded the agency and proved herself a reliable and accomplished businesswoman. In the early 1980s, she went to work for Joe Harding Supply's accounting department. In 1991, she went to work for the City of Joplin starting in the Human Resources Department, moving on to the City Courts, then transferring to the Civil Defense Department and finished her career in the Code Enforcement Division. She retired from employment with the City of Joplin in May 3, 2004.
Sharon was very active socially and was also involved in local civic matters. In 2011, she was asked to work at the Arthritis Foundation on a part time basis as the office manager. After the May 2011 tornado, the Building Department of the City of Joplin asked Sharon to be a member of the Building Board. She accepted and assisted the building department until the time of her passing.
Sharon is a beloved mother of three sons, two step-children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. Sharon is survived by her husband, Jerry Ferneau and the following family members: eldest son, Douglas G. Ferguson, of Pittsburg, Kan., and his three children, Jerred, Roland and Amber Ferguson, all of Columbus, Ohio; middle son, Timothy C. Sharon loved spending time with her grandchildren and her great-grandchild. She was an avid gardener and reader, but what came most naturally to her was being a mother. Mom was a parent, advisor, ally, mentor and trusted friend that touched each of us in the deepest way possible. We appreciate the unconditional love and sacrifice she showed us. We were all very lucky to have had you as our Mom.
Sharon attended Blendville Christian Church and will be missed by her family and many friends.
In accordance with her wishes, Sharon was cremated and had a private graveside service with family members at Ozark Memorial Cemetery on Thursday, Oct. 11th. Sharon desired not to have a memorial service but wanted people to remember her life in celebration.
Contributions can be made to the Blendville Christian Church in remembrance of her.
