JOPLIN, Mo. —
John W. Sherwood, age 93, of Joplin, Mo., passed away at 3:26 a.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, following a lengthy illness.
John was born Oct. 20, 1919, in Rochester, N.Y. He received a degree in engineering from the University of Rochester in New York. He was a veteran in the Army Air Corp during World War II, serving as a radio operator and navigator. Following his military service he worked as a design engineer for McDonnell-Douglas, now Boeing Aircraft in St. Louis, for 32 years, retiring in 1984. During his career he was a design engineer for the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs as well as several other military programs. John and his wife moved to Joplin in 2009, from St. Louis, to be close to their daughter.
John married Doris Rahmberg Dec. 2, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo. She preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 2010.
He was also preceded in death by a son, John A. Sherwood; twin sisters, Ruth and Rita Sherwood; and a brother, Henry Sherwood.
Survivors include a daughter, Dory Dennis (Steve), Carl Junction, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Sherwood, St. Peters, Mo.; a brother, James Sherwood, Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Agnes OKeen, Rochester; five grandchildren, Jennifer White (Bryan), Grant Dennis (Jennifer), Matthew Sherwood (Diane), Kurt Sherwood (Jaime) and Craig Sherwood (Becky); seven great-grandchildren and one on the way.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel with Allen Brintnall, Minister, officiating. Burial will follow in the Carl Junction Cemetery. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
Memorial contributions are requested to Spring River Christian Village in care of the mortuary.
