John N. Ivie

JOPLIN, Mo. — John Nelson Ivie, age 83, passed from this life on Nov. 4, 2013, in Joplin, Mo.

John was born May 7, 1930, in Webb City, Mo. He was the son of Charles Carl and Mary Ethelma (Smith) Ivie. A graduate of Joplin High School, Class of 1948, he received his Business Degree in 1952, at the University of Kansas. While at K.U., he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity and Scabbard & Blade Honorary Society. Then followed a 2 year tour of duty as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, with part of that time spent in Korea. John returned to Joplin in 1954 and pursued a business career in the local community. After working a number of years with local firms, he served 25 years as President and General Manager of Union Transfer & Storage, Inc. Upon sale of this company, he worked eight years for the Joplin Public Library.

As a young man, he was active in the Joplin Junior Chamber of Commerce, serving as President. A long-time member of the Joplin Rotary Club, he also served that club as President and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

He was a past member of the Joplin Library Board, Twin Hills Country Club, Blue Lodge #845 and was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Bodies.

As a 72-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Joplin, he served as both a Deacon and an Elder. An avid rooter of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas Jayhawks, John enjoyed the sports scene his entire life. He also enjoyed reading, as well as his association with those he worked with.

In 1952, John married Mary Evelyn Covert in Joplin. She survives; also surviving are two sons, Kelly Covert Ivie, of Tacoma, Wash. and John Bradley (Joanne) Ivie, of Glen Rock, N.J.; a granddaughter, Devon Elizabeth Ivie; and a grandson, Travis James Ivie.; also a brother, Jerry Clark (Jean) Ivie, Houston, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. David Burgess officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Joplin Public Library.
