JOPLIN, Mo. —
John K. Ewell, 54, Joplin, Mo., passed away Monday, May 6, 2013, following a lengthy illness.
John was born to Cline and Suzy Ewell, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Kris; his mother-in-law, Barbara Swim; a sister, Judy Lynn Walker and husband, Art; and a niece, Cheryl Shaffer and husband, Nathan.
John went to college at OU when he was 17 years of age and worked for Campbell Steel Mill to pay for it. After words, he joined the Peace Corps and traveled to help in the Pakistan floods of 1973. He then went to Guadalajara to dig wells for clean drinking water. In the 1980s he came back to NSU where he studied computer programming. While attending NSU he met his wife and married her in 1985. They moved to Fayetteville, Ark., where he studied psychology at UA and worked as a crisis counselor for two years.
John loved the outdoors, including hiking and fishing. He worked in a sporting goods department for a time. He was disabled young, but his love for his wife, dog and a good book kept him entertained for many years. He will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Those wishing to commemorate his passing are encouraged to donate to a charity of their choice in lieu of flowers.
