WEBB CITY, Mo. —
Treva Jane Dawson, age 70, of Webb City, Mo,. a wonderful wife and mother, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2013, at her home.
Treva was born July 4, 1942, in Wichita, Kan., daughter of the late Robert L. Gilstrap and Fern E. Jones Gilstrap. Her family moved to Missouri, settling in Joplin, where she attended school and then graduated from Joplin High School in 1960, and was still very active with the alumni of her class. Following high school she attended Joplin Junior College where she met her future husband, James S. Dawson, who she married Nov. 27, 1964 in Webb City. They continued their education at Kansas State College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) in Pittsburg, Kan., where she received her Bachelor's degree in Education. She taught in North Carolina, and then returned to Webb City where she taught in the Webb City Elementary Schools for many years. She continued to be active in Bright Futures in the Webb City School District. She was always very involved with local community affairs over the years and was known as a very patriotic person.
Treva was also a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Webb City ,where she was active in the music program and was a Sunday School teacher for many years, mainly in the children's department and many years with Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Gospel Strings which played throughout the community including the local Farmer's Market and entertained many at community functions and at local nursing centers.
She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother who devoted much of her time to her family. She carried on her mother's family traditions and was known for her cooking and family gatherings. "Mom mom", as she was known by her grandchildren, gave her family many fond memories to cherish, including their time at Big Sugar among other things.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, James Dawson; her sons, Brendan Dawson and wife, Hazel, of Webb City, Jonathan Dawson and wife, Andrea, of Carl Junction, Mo., and Nathan Dawson and wife, Deanna, of Raymore, Mo.; brothers, Robert L. Gilstrap and wife, Sherry, of Lee's Summit, Mo., and William E. Gilstrap and wife, Linda, of Joplin; sister, Janice Garrett and husband, Richard, of Carl Junction; grandchildren, Isaac, Olivia, Matthew, Andrew, Aaron, Alexander, Spencer and Loran; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 24, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Webb City, with Rev. Bob Easton, Rev. Joe Fowler and Chaplain Captain Nathan Dawson officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Webb City, with family serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Webb City, on Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m.
The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Bright Futures of Webb City Schools, or to the Webb City R-7 Schools Foundation.
