GALENA, KS — Kenneth Warren Sternes Jr., age 76, of Galena, Kan., passed away on Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at Joplin Healthcare Center, following a long illness. Kenneth was born on May 25, 1934, in Taylorville, Ill., the son of the late Kenneth and Velva (Higginbotham) Sternes. He served in the United States Army in Germany. He worked 41 years for Eagle Picher. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He was a loving father and very proud of his stepchildren and grandchildren. He married Wilmetta Laturner Means on Nov. 26, 1976, in Joplin, and she survives. Additional survivors include two sons, Don Means and wife Vicki, Galena, and Dale Means and wife Nina, Del City, Okla.; two daughters, Carol Kennedy and husband Gary, Galena, and Linda Henderson, Joplin; three sisters, Helen Mauck, Newburg, Ind., Donna Grubb, Dallas, Texas, and Elizabeth Sternes, Joplin, Mo.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. James B. Lankford, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena. The pallbearers will be his grandsons. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Chapel.
