Jane H. Maxwell

COLUMBUS, Kan. — COLUMBUS, Kan. - Jane Hancock Maxwell, age, 93, of Columbus, Kan. died Sept. 21, 2012, at the home of her daughter in Columbus.

She was born Jan. 26,1919, in Webster Groves, Mo. from the union of John Hancock and Sarah Myrtle Cummins. She was raised in Berryville and Harrison, Ark. by her mother and grandparents after the death of her father in 1921.

Jane had two sisters, Marietta Edens and Getha Shoemake both deceased; and one brother, John Hancock also deceased; she was also preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Lyla Marie Patterson.

She married Charles E. Maxwell, Jr. on Sept. 4,1938, in Branson, Mo. at the First Presbyterian Church. They celebrated 73 3/4 years of marriage before his death on March 6, 2012. They lived throughout Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas during their marriage, leaving a legacy of great friends. Jane and Charles loved golfing together and she had her first hole-in-one at the age of 85. Jane was a 66 year member of Chapter V, PEO sisterhood, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbus.

She is survived by four children, Edd Maxwell, and wife, Shirley, of Stanley, Kan., John Maxwell, of San Francisco, Jan Houser, and husband Wes, of Columbus, and Ellen Maxwell, wife of Joel Wallerstedt, of Louisburg, Kan; She has 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, in Park Cemetery, Columbus, under the directon of Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus. Pastor Margaret Johnson will officiate.

The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice for their care and concern during the last month of Jane's life. They are also grateful to the staff at the Gran Villas of Columbus, for their care of Jane the last 3 1/2 years.
