J.T. Burkey, 92, of Independence, Kan., died Sept. 12, 2011, at Regal Estate Nursing Home in Independence.
A memorial service was held Sept. 15, at the Bible Holiness Church in Independence, with Rev. Joe Davolt and Rev. Duane Johnson officiating. Interment was in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence.
Mr. Burkey was born Sept. 6, 1919, at Sarcoxie, Mo., RR No. 1, to John and Susie (Carmichael) Burkey and attended Sarcoxie schools.
J.T. married Dena Luelf at Troy, Mo., in 1941. They lived 10 miles west of Jasper, Mo., and farmed in that area for many years. He then moved to Altoona, Kan., where he farmed until he retired and moved to Independence.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dena; and a son, Marvin Burkey.
He is survived by a daughter, Alma Sue Burkey, Independence; a sister, Nelma Burkey Lawrence, Webb City, Mo.; two grandchildren, Shawna McBee, Walton, Kan., and Troy Burkey, Andover, Kan.; two great-grandchildren, Kadin Burke McBee and Dylan Ray McBee; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
