Richard N. Day

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Richard N. Day, 82, Carthage, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the Sarcoxie Nursing Center, Sarcoxie, Mo.

Richard Neal Day was born Nov. 26, 1931, in Webb City, Mo., a son of the late Joseph Dewey Day and Bernice (Kent) Day. Richard was a graduate of Webb City High School, Class of 1949 and received his teaching degree at Pittsburg Teacher's College (PSU), Pittsburg, Kan.

He married Martha Ann Witherspoon on Feb. 28, 1954, she preceded him in death on Dec. 18, 2011. He was a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army retiring after 35 years of service. Richard was a member of the First Baptist Church, Carthage and a member of the Missouri Retired Officers Association. Richard was a teacher at Marysville, Kan. For three years and moved to Carthage where he taught history at the Carthage Junior High School for 23 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Barrett, husband, Chuck, Carthage and Pam Joyce, husband, Greg, Springdale, Ark.; two sons, Randy Day, wife, Linda, Carthage and Larry Day, wife, Patti, Waldorf, Md.; three granddaughters, Stephanie McCoy, husband, Ryan, Sierra Barrett and Lindsay Lambright, husband, Wes; five grandsons, Jeff Day, fiancée, Niki, Tiberi, Tim Barrett, wife, Jessica, Daniel Barrett, wife, Crystal, Josh Barrett and Matt Joyce; five great-grandchildren, Emma, Eily, Jonah, Jacquelyn and Jenaveve. He is also survived by three brothers, Ronald Day, wife, Perm, Joplin, Mo., Norval Day, wife, Janis, Shawnee, Kan. and Terry Day, Springfield, Mo.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 10, at the Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m Tuesday, March 11, in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Veterans Section, Webb City, Mo. Full military honors will be presented.

Memorial gifts are suggested to the Wounded Warriors in care of  Knell Mortuary, Carthage, MO.
