John Thomas "Tom" Periman

CARTHAGE, Mo. — John Thomas "Tom" Periman, a life-long resident of Carthage, Mo., passed away Friday, March 7, 2014, at his home.

Tom was born Jan, 30, 1936, in Carthage, to Lewis "Bus" Periman and Vera Duke Periman. Tom was raised by his grandparents, Matthew Ernest and Maggie C. Periman. He attended Hawthorne Elementary School and was in school sports, setting several school records. He was a graduate of Carthage Senior High School, Class of 1954, and attended Pittsburg Teacher's College, (PSU), Pittsburg, Kan., for two years.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Elaine Houston, Aug. 31, 1956, at First Christian Church, Carthage. To this union two children, Craig Thomas Periman and Shalaine Beth Periman were born.

Tom was active in Carthage Jay-Cees, Carthage Archery Club, KP Lodge and for several years was a member of the Wednesday Night Bowling League. He was also a member of the Fairview Christian Church, Carthage. Tom retired from Missouri Gas Energy in 1992, after 33 years as maintenance of gas pressure. He loved to hunt, fish and spend time on Grand Lake.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of the home; his son, Craig (Shelly) Periman, Joplin; a daughter, Shalaine Periman, Springfield, Mo.; a grandson, Adam (April) Periman, Fairview, Mo.; a granddaughter, Ashley (Brandon) Tate, Carthage; three step grandchildren, Travis (Lindsey) Hoke, Joplin, Jarod and Jordan Kuhns, Joplin, Mo.; two great-grandsons, Braxton Tate and Bradyn Mosier, Carthage; two great-granddaughters, Ava and Alia Periman, Fairview; two sisters, Sandy (Dale)Cannell and Marge (Ted) Marse, both of DeSoto, Kan.; stepmother, Mary Periman, Kansas City, Mo.; two stepbrothers, James (Linda) Tremain, Kansas City, and Larry Tremain; a brother-in-law, Denzil McConnell, Pensacola, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Lewis "Bus" and Dorothy Periman, DeSoto; mother and stepfather, Vera and Tris Coffin, Santa Monica, Calif.; grandparents, Matt and Maggie Periman, Carthage; and a sister-in-law, Sharon McConnell.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 13, in the Knell Mortuary Chapel.

Memorial gifts are suggested to Hospice Compassus or the donors charity of choice in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 West Chestnut, Carthage.
