Margie Aileen Williams

JOPLIN, Mo. — Margie Aileen Williams, age 91, of Baxter Springs, Kan., passed away on March 11, 2014, due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Margie was born on Nov. 3, 1922, to the union of Robert A. and May Y. (Young) Smith in Baxter Springs.

She married Roy Clarence Williams on Aug. 19, 1944, in West Los Angeles, Calif.

After graduating high school, she received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Kansas State College of Pittsburg in 1963.

She operated a private kindergarten in her home before she became a public school teacher. She spent 25 years working in the Baxter Springs school system, for a total teaching career of 27 years, retiring in May of 1988. Margie also loved working in the nursery at First Baptist Church of Baxter Springs for 25 years, where she was a faithful member. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Good Sam's Motorhome Club, Retired Teachers Association, and Kansas Association of Retired School Teachers (KARSP). She also enjoyed recycling magazines to make books for children, artwork and crafts, painting, and was a volunteer at the Baxter Springs Heritage Museum.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother-in-law, Gene Williams; and one sister-in-law, Betty Williams.

Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Wimberley, of Baxter Springs, Carol Sweeton, of Joplin, Janet Williamson (husband, Richard), of Baxter Springs, and Beverly Barnett (husband, Jeremy), of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother-in-law, Howard Williams; one sister-in-law, Mary Williams; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service has been scheduled on Friday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Baxter Springs. Visitation will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service. Chaplain Bud Clap and Pastor Jeff Street will officiate. A second service with burial will be held at a later date.
