Wanda S. Cornett

JOPLIN, Mo. — Mrs. Wanda Sue Cornett, 70, of Joplin, Mo., departed this life on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Freeman Hospital West, after a recent decline in health.

Wanda entered this life on Oct. 25, 1943, in Fresno, Calif., to the late Alvie and Frankie (Mitchell) Cooper.  She has been a resident of Joplin, since childhood.

On Oct. 31, 1959, in Miami, Okla., she was united in marriage to Kenneth A. Cornett and to this union two sons and one daughter were born. Besides being a homemaker, Wanda worked as a housekeeper and later in life was a devoted foster parent to several area children. She enjoyed being outdoors where her favorite activities were gardening, camping, fishing and spending time on Grand Lake. She also loved to read and was a practical joker. She attended College Heights Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Delbert Wayne Cooper.

Wanda is survived by her husband of 54 years, Kenneth A. Cornett, of the home; two sons, Kenny Cornett and wife, Jody, of Carthage, Mo. and Keith Andy Cornett, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a daughter, Karen Cornett, also of Joplin; four grandsons; five great-grandsons; three sisters, Mary Lou Anderson, Alva Overman and Levana Jones, all of Joplin; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday, March 20, in the chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin with Ministers Gary Jones and Jeannie Criddle officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hornet Cemetery near Joplin. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Kevin Cooper, Wayne Cooper, Brandon Overman, Lionel Gilstrap, Tim Jones, and Jason Cooper. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. in the mortuary chapel.
