JOPLIN, Mo. —
Kent Allen Shanks, age 67, Joplin, passed away on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation Center after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Kent was born Oct. 27, 1945 in Joplin, son of the late Harold A. Shanks and Anna Imogene Horton Shanks. He graduated from Diamond High School in 1962, and then earned a business degree from Joplin Business College. He worked in construction most of his adult life and was owner and operator of Shanks' Construction for over 43 years. He was a member of the N.R.A. and was also a member of First Community Church.
Kent was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed fishing and working in his garden. He was known for his beautiful flowers, vegetables and fruit trees. He was always there to help his family and friends. Shortly after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, having surgery to remove the affected areas, and still in need of treatments, he was helping those that were displaced by the tornado to get them back into their homes as soon as possible.
Kent leaves behind his children, Scott Shanks and wife, Kelsee, of Carl Junction, Jeff Shanks and wife, Jayme, of Webb City, Steve Shanks, of Joplin, Carrie Volrath and husband, Todd, of Webb City, and Jamie Shanks, of Carthage; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Karen Kimbrough, of Forsyth, Mo.; stepfather, George Hubbard and wife, Marge, of Joplin; and long time friend, Candy Gagle, of Joplin.
