JOPLIN, Mo. —
Mr. Clifford Thomas Kelly, 96, of Joplin, Mo., departed this life on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at his residence after three months of declining health.
Clifford entered this life on Oct. 6, 1917, in Hyatteville, Kan., one of six children born to the late Patrick and Henrietta Kelly. He was raised in Pittsburg, Kan. and was a graduate of Pittsburg High School. He has resided in Joplin since the late 1930s.
On Jan. 31, 1940, he was united in marriage to Mariana S. Stephens and to this union a son and daughter were born.
He served his country faithfully in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. He rose to the rank of first lieutenant and was lead navigator aboard the B-24 Bomber. After being honorably discharged he returned home and started his career in the real-estate and appraisal business. He owned Southwest Investment Appraisals until his retirement in 1989. He enjoyed traveling to Hot Springs, Ark., to attend horse races and was proud of his service to his country.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 56 years, Mariana Kelly, on Aug. 19, 1996; and three siblings, Barbara, Patrick and Madelyn.
Clifford is survived by one son, Stephen Kelly and wife, Anna, of Joplin; a daughter, Patricia Edwards and husband, Jimmie, of Blytheville, Ark.; four grandchildren, Stacy Kelly, Cliff Edwards, Kelly Edwards and Patrick Edwards; two great-grandchildren, Brady and Tyson Edwards; two brothers, Joseph and Charles Kelly; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Graveside funeral services with full military for Mr. Kelly are at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City, Mo. The family will receive friends on Friday afternoon from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin.
