Victor I. Castens

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Victor Ivan Castens was born, Aug. 25, 1935, at Lafe, Green County, Ark., to Emil William Henry Castens and Agnes Dorothea Tammen who preceded him in death.

After a long illness he passed away on July 2, 2013, in Pittsburg, Kan. Vic graduated from St. Johns Lutheran Grade School, Lafe, Ark. and Lockwood, Missouri High School. He worked after graduation in a television repair shop in Lockwood, Mo., while he pursued his education in Practical and Theoretical Radio and Television through the National Radio Institute.

Upon graduation in 1955, he accepted a position with radio station KGHM Brookfield, Mo., as an engineer. In 1957, he went to work for KOAM Radio and TV Pittsburg, Kan., as an engineer.  March 10, 1982, he was promoted to Chief Engineer of Technical Operations a position he had until his retirement in 2001, after 43 years at KOAM TV.

He had many hobbies including amateur radio broadcasting, getting his pilot license in 1965, woodworking, cave exploration and many collections. He took several courses at PSU over the years. He was an avid genealogist and was a member of the Crawford County Genealogical Society for many years. He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Pittsburg, Kan.

On Oct. 7, 1977, he married Patricia Lane in Pittsburg, Kan., she survives him. He is also survived by one sister, Yvonne (David) Prough; and a niece, Jennifer Prough, Pittsburg, Kan.; an uncle, Rev. Louis Castens, of Madison, Wisc.; and three aunts, Frieda Eggerman, of Lockwood, Mo., Edna Brown, of Citrus Heights, Calif. and Kathryn Tammen, of Redmond, Wash. He is also survived by several cousins.

His wishes were to be cremated and no services.
