Ron F. Oney

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Ron F. Oney, age 77, of Webb City, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Freeman West Hospital.

He was born June 12, 1936, in Bowling Green, Mo., the son of Dr. Glenn Oney and Bonnie Oney. He and his family moved to Alba, Mo., when he was 9 years old. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1954. Ron attended Culver Stockton College in Canton, Mo., on a football scholarship. Ron enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956, and was stationed in Germany where he played baseball, basketball and football. He also boxed in the Army where he was nicknamed "The Bull". After returning home from military service, he played football at Joplin JuCo. He also played football at Pittsburg State and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1960.

In 1967, he married Ellen McKnight. They had two children, Ron "Bullsie" Oney and Sherry Byrd Brown.

He had an amazing career as a coach and teacher in Sun City, Kan., Granby, Mo., Carl Junction, Mo., and Oswego, Kan. He loved the time he spent with his players. In 1976, he started work for Farmers Insurance Company where he maintained an agency for 37 years, with the help of Pam Melton and Kristan Frisinger. Always civic minded, he served as a regent of Missouri Southern College for one year. He served on the Webb City School Board for 27 years, he also was a member of the Joplin Host Lions Club where he held several offices. He was an avid Webb City Cardinals fan. Ron was on the go all the time, traveling to horse races, golfing in Arizona and Florida, hunting pheasant in Nebraska, and quail hunting wherever he could. He enjoyed the ocean at Destin, Fla. He loved his family, friends and life in general. He lived every day as if it were his last. He was our rock and our compass.

Ron is survived by his wife, Ellen; a daughter, Sherry and husband, Ed Brown; a son, Ron "Bullsie" Oney and daughter-in-law, Dawn Oney; and three granddaughters, Brooke and husband, James Walker, Kari and husband, Scott Buffer and Lauren and husband, Daniel Stadler. Ron is also survived by five great-grandsons, Dylan Walker, Jace, Kelby and Landry Buffer and Jude Stadler; and a brother, Bonham and wife, Lida Oney, of Carthage.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 12, at 10 a.m. at the Barton Auditorium in Webb City. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City. Burial will follow in Weaver Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorial donations may be made to the Webb City R-7 School District Foundation in his memory.
