JOPLIN, MO —
Irene Waltman Hill, age 98, of Joplin, passed from life on this earth Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at 6:58 a.m., having finished her course and kept the faith, and is now at home with the Lord, her maker and the maker of all. She was surrounded by family and angels in her last hours. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Psalms 116:15
Irene was born May 1, 1913, in Galena, Kan., to the marriage of Frederick Hinman and Neva Hensley Hinman.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward; sister, Helen; and husbands, Cecil Waltman in March 1974, and John Hill in November 2009.
She was a member of the Park Plaza Christian Church. As a daughter, sister, student, teacher, employee, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend, Irene always believed in demonstrating love, kindness, thoughtfulness and wisdom in her day to day living no matter who might see or not see.
She was a strong woman who began her grade school teaching career at age 18, after graduating one year early from Galena High School in 1930. She also obtained a Bachelors degree from Pittsburg State University. In addition to living in Galena and Joplin, she also lived in Tulsa, Okla., Chicago, Ill., and Bell Gardens, Calif. Irene taught school in Galena, Kan., Joplin, and at Cookson Hills Christian School in Kansas, Okla. While in her 80s, Irene worked for College Press Publishing Co. for a number of years.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Goodwin and husband, Larry, of Goodland, Kan., and Margot Burlingame, of Joplin; four stepsons, Bruce Hill and wife, Lynn, Whitewater, Mont., Daniel Hill, Moscow, Russia, Lincoln Hill, Frisco, Texas, and Doug Hill and wife, Mun Young, Palatine, Ill.; three stepdaughters, C. Virginia Bendure and husband, Harvey, Asbury, Mo., Susan Moore and husband, Douglas, Platte City, Mo., and Tina Robinson and husband, Jeffrey, New Lenox, Ill.; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the Park Plaza Christian Church, B.A. Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Osborne Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Friday, Aug. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m.
