Roy Tanquary

BARTLESVILLE, OK —    

Roy Shepard Tanquary, 94, of Bartlesville, Okla., passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2012, at his home.

He was born Jan. 27, 1918, in Baxter Springs, Kan., to Olin Roy and Dora Ethel (Shepard) Tanquary. Roy grew in Baxter Springs and graduated high school there. After high school, he went to work for Rogers Iron Works in Joplin, Mo. Roy enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, and after his honorable discharge, returned to Rogers Iron Works for two more years.

He married Keturah Love McNabb on June 12, 1949, at Carthage, Mo., and went to work for Kansas City Southern/Joplin Union Depot. Roy was a clerk for the railroad for 35 years before his retirement. The Tanquarys moved from Broken Arrow, Okla. to Bartlesville, over eight years ago. Roy had attended Joplin Business College and earned an Associates degree from Drury College in Springfield, Mo. He was a member of the Broken Arrow Baptist Church and the Baxter Springs Masonic Lodge. Roy enjoyed camping, fishing, photography and was an avid swimmer. He was proud of his grandsons and enjoyed singing bass in the church choir.  

Roy is survived by a son, Pastor Tom Tanquary and wife, Judy, of Bartlesville; a daughter, Rebecca Sue Hormann and husband, John, of Scamania, Wash.; five grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Olin and Dora Tanquary; his wife, Keturah Love Tanquary; a sister, Vivian Tanquary.

Funeral services for Roy Shepard Tanquary are at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Delaware First Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Tanquary officiating. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Park Cemetery in Columbus, Kan.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Benjamin Funeral Service.
