John Washburn

ASBURY, Mo. —

John Washburn was born Feb. 6, 1954, to Jack and June Washburn, of Asbury, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Amelia June Washburn; paternal grandparents, Tom and Flossie Washburn; maternal grandparents, Roy and Mary Byler; and niece, Lori Vanderpool.

John left this life Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Washburn; daughters, Abby, Samantha and Karli; sons, Kelli and Kyle Washburn and Blake Abbott, of Dallas, Texas; his father and stepmother, Jack and JoAnn Washburn, of Asbury; six siblings, Patti Colvin, of Locust Grove, Okla., David Washburn, of Saddlebrooke, Mo., and Sue Emmert, of Asbury, Michael McWhirt, Pittsburg, Kan., Patrick McWhirt, Springfield, Mo., and Terrence McWhirt, Joplin, Mo.; and five nieces, three nephews and three great-nephews.

John was raised on a farm in Asbury, where he learned the value of family, hard work and dedication. John graduated from Carl Junction High School in 1972. He lived on his farm that joined his fathers and sisters farms. He was a very avid cowboy and cattle rancher. He loved the life of the cowboy and thoroughly enjoyed being close to his family running the family ranch with his father Jack. Every chance they had it was saddle up and ride.

John spent many years in the food service industry, working his way into numerous management positions. John's ambitious nature led him to open his own food distribution company, Specialty Foods in Joplin in 2005. He built this business into a successful business that was sold one and a half years ago. At the time of death, John owned and operated several Gringo's restaurants in Joplin, Carthage and Neosho, Mo.

John was a self-made man who valued family and God above all else. John Washburn touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

"The measure of a man isn't found in the promises he makes, but those he keeps."

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Christ's Church of Oronogo.

In lieu of flowers, the family has set up an account at Arvest Bank where memorial donations can be made in John's memory.

Services are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City.
