JOPLIN, Mo. —
Fred E. Vickers, Jr., age 66, of Joplin, Mo., passed away early Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at Mercy Hospital following an illness.
Fred was born on Aug. 9, 1946, in Joplin, the son of Fred, Sr. and Kathern (Burtrum) Vickers. He has been a lifetime area resident, Fred worked for Joplin Concrete as a salesman and truck driver for many years; most recently Fred was a bus driver for the Joplin R-VIII school district. He loved to work on old cars, especially hot rods and attended many hot rod shows and restoring as many as he could get his hands on.
He married Sharon Conway on July 15, 1988, in Miami, Okla., she survives.
Additional survivors include his parents, Fred, Sr. and Kathern; his son, David Vickers and his wife, Tashena, of Joplin; eight daughters, Terri Lynn Thornton and her husband, Kevin, of Carl Junction, Mo., Tracy Ross and her husband, Jeff, Kelli Vickers, Shelly Periman and her husband, Craig, Amanda Whaley and her husband, Jayson, Brooklyn Vickers, Cydney Vickers and Kayden Vickers, all of Joplin; two brothers, David Vickers and his wife, Tina and Bobby Vickers and his wife, Wendy, both of Joplin; one sister, Althea Burlison and her husband, Ron, of Mount Vernon, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Fred was preceded in death by one daughter, Megan Ballard; and one sister, Carolyn Hight.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at the Mason-Woodard Chapel, Rev. Charlie Burnett, will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 to 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to the Fred E. Vickers, Jr. Memorial Fund in care of the mortuary.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
