JOPLIN, Mo. —
Robert Lewis Atkinson, age 60, of Joplin, passed away on Saturday Dec. 8, 2012, at Webb City Health & Rehab, following a long illness.
Robert was born on Nov. 13, 1952, in Joplin, the son of the late Fred and Dorothy Atkinson. He has been a lifetime resident. He graduated from Memorial High School in 1971. He worked for 16 years as a funeral director, starting with Lee and Ann Mason, then continuing with Dee and Wayne Woodard at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. He then went to work for the state of Oklahoma, and completed his career with Aegis Communications in Joplin. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. He was a 32nd degree Mason with Fellowship Lodge #345.
Robert is survived by three brothers, Bill Atkinson and wife, Vicki, Franklin, Tenn., Jack Atkinson and wife, Ardyth, Oronogo, Mo., and Larry Atkinson, San Diego, Calif.; one sister, Gloria Atkinson, Joplin; his step-mother, Gladys Atkinson, Joplin; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Pastor Jill Michaels will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
