Hartford L. “Pat” Patrick, 89, Carthage, Mo., passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2010, at his home after a sudden illness.
Hartford Lessie Patrick was born Jan. 30, 1921, in Moberly, Mo., the son of Lessie Patrick and Ruby (Zeltner) Patrick. He was a graduate of Huntsville High School, Huntsville, Mo.; received his B.S. degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1942; his M.S. degree from MU in 1968; attending University of Minnesota, Duluth, Minn., and Colorado State, Fort Collins, Colo.
He married his beloved wife, Betty Lou Brown, on Sept. 23, 1945, in Osceola, Mo. She preceded him in death on May 15, 2005.
He was the director of the University Extension Services for four counties in Southwest Missouri, retiring from the University of Missouri in 1985. Hartford was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Field Artillery as a 2nd lieutenant for the 45th Field Artillery, 8th Division, during World War II, until 1945. At that time he worked in sales for J.I. Case Company and then received his first assignment as “County Agent” for the University of Missouri in St. Clair County, Mo., in 1955. During his working years he was active in the Masonic Lodge, AF&AM;, No. 293, Osceola, the Carthage Rotary Club, the Carthage Municipal Golf League and was a charter member of the SMB Coffee Club, C & W Restaurant, Carthage.
Hartford was a wonderful father to five children, John (Nelda) Patrick, Carthage, Paul (Deborah) Patrick, Aurora, Colo., Philip Patrick, Carthage, and Mary Patrick (Paul) Seigfreid, Mexico, Mo.; one brother, Oran Patrick, Moberly; and four grandchildren, Matthew Patrick, Sarah Seigfreid, William Seigfreid and Robert Seigfreid. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; and a daughter, Pam Patrick.
Visitation was Wednesday, April 14, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 15, at Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage. Fr. Steve Wilson will officiate. Inurnment will be in Osceola Cemetery, Osceola.
Memorial gifts are suggested to the Sunshine Children’s Home, Carthage, or the donor’s charity of choice.
