JOPLIN — Walter J. Sparlin, age 83, of Joplin, Mo., passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at St. John’s Regional Medical Center following a long illness.
He was born Nov. 19, 1924, in Seneca, Mo., the son of Walter and Ora Benson Sparlin. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, having served in Africa, Italy and Germany. Walter worked for the Joplin R-VIII School District as a custodian retiring in 1985.
Walter married Evelyn Irelan on Dec. 24, 1946, in Columbus, Kan. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include two sons, Donald Sparlin and his wife, Marilyn, and Dale Sparlin and his wife, Kathy, all of Joplin; one daughter, Linda Watkins, of Joplin; four granddaughters; one grandson; two great-granddaughters; and three great-grandsons.
Walter has been taken for cremation. A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, May 3, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mason-Woodard Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the mortuary.
