Anne Kettenbrink: Vacation needed after making plans

In June, I am going on an adventure.

There will be wild animals, untamed beasts, unexplored territory, frightening Jeep rides and, most likely, cultural clashes.

Family vacation, here I come.

My brother is graduating from law school, and to celebrate the occasion (and the possibility that perhaps he will support the rest of us), my parents and I are going up to Chicago.

For a lot of families, this would not be that big of a deal. For my family, it is.

My family doesn’t really go on family vacations. When I was in fourth grade, our car started to break down on the trip home from Christmas in St. Louis.

While my dad fretted about whether he could make it the rest of the way home with no headlights, my brother and I whispered excitedly in the back seat about the possibility that we might get to stay in a hotel.

Oh, the anticipation of staying in a roadside motel in Warrenton.

Obviously, we were not seasoned travelers.

Our excitement must have spurred Mom and Dad into action, because not long after that, we took an actual family vacation to Chicago, which is where we’ll be returning this summer.

This time, Mom and I will be sharing a room, and Dad and his snoring will be sharing a room. One can only hope that we don’t have to sleep next door.

Anyway, in order to avoid the sure disaster that would await if we all slept in my brother’s studio apartment, we decided a hotel was the way to go.

Now, keep in mind that when I say my brother lives in Chicago, I could mean that he lives in Naperville, or Rockford, or some other suburb that’s more like what we’re used to. But I don’t mean that. I mean that he lives in downtown Chicago, where things are ridiculously expensive. And we will have to find a hotel in this ridiculously expensive area.

So my mom and I connected by phone line, and then we went online to all the usual suspects, looking for good deals at places that weren’t too scary. The first step was convincing my dad that hotels don’t cost $40 a night now, especially in a big city.

Once we got that out of the way, it was down to figuring out what place we could afford and fit our tastes.
