How important were Thursday’s presidential caucuses in Iowa?

Important enough that John Putnam, of rural Carthage, said he and his wife, Merre, have been in Des Moines since New Year’s Day volunteering in the campaign of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

The outcome of the Republican and Democratic caucuses “will be very influential,” Putnam said, “in terms of bragging rights and fund raising.”

The winners “will get the momentum, and a financial shot in the arm” for their campaigns, said Putnam, chairman of the Jasper County Republican Central Committee and a phone-bank volunteer in Iowa.

Other Missourians also worked for candidates in Iowa.

U.S. Sen. Christopher “Kit” Bond made four stops Wednesday to speak at rallies and meet with volunteers as he campaigned for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt was helping in the campaign of Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor. A busload of about 50 Missouri volunteers for Romney spent the weekend in Iowa to hand out pamphlets, make phone calls and attend rallies, according to Missouri House Speaker Rod Jetton, another Romney supporter who helped organize the trip.

She did not campaign in Iowa, but she has closely watched the events, said Susan DeCarlo, chairwoman of the Jasper County Democratic Central Committee.

“It’s the first step in narrowing the field, and the outcome will have an impact on the next primaries,” she said.

DeCarlo said she is not worried about which Democratic candidate wins the primaries and the nomination “because we have so many excellent, well-qualified candidates, we’re going to win the White House.”

The winner “always gets a boost,” but with so many early primaries, the importance of Iowa and New Hampshire has diminished somewhat, said Doug Brooks, of Joplin, a member of the Democratic National Committee.

“It’s still important, just not as important as it used to be,” he said. “But the Democratic field is just so outstanding, even that evens things out a little bit.” He is supporting Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Brooks noted that Missouri earlier was a caucus state, and he said he participated in the Iowa caucuses when volunteering in the presidential campaign of former Missouri U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt.
