HIGHFILL, Ark. — Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee returned to home turf on Friday as part of a campaign swing leading up to the Super Tuesday primary.

Between 150 and 200 people gathered in a hangar at the Northwest Arkansas Airport to hear from the GOP presidential candidate, who served as governor from 1996 to 2007.

Introduced as “the only true conservative” in the race, Huckabee stressed his stance as an anti-abortion candidate and a supporter of the Second Amendment.

“People are looking for genuine convictions rather than election-year conversions,” he said. “Pro-life should define us as a country. I signed 11 pieces of pro-life legislation while I was governor to make Arkansas one of the most pro-life states in the nation.”

Huckabee, a Baptist minister, questioned the conservative label claimed by GOP opponent Mitt Romney, saying the former Massachusetts governor “supported the Brady Bill (gun legislation) and is only a recent convert to the Bush tax cuts.”

“We believe in lower taxes, less government and local control,” he said.

Huckabee is a supporter of the so-called “fair tax plan” that would replace the current system with a national sales tax.

“It doesn’t penalize productivity like the current system does,” he said. “I’d like to end the IRS and make April 15 just another beautiful day in Arkansas.”

He questioned whether candidates with a history in Washington would be able to balance the federal budget.

“We balanced the state budget every year for nine years, but your grandchildren owe $9 trillion,” he said.

If elected, he said he would champion a strong national defense for the nation, and energy independence within 10 years.

Huckabee has not won a primary since his Jan. 3 victory in the Iowa caucuses. Acknowledging his role as an underdog, he urged his supporters “to help us win on Tuesday and confuse people all over America.”

Mandy and Bert Jones, of Lowell, Ark., said they attended the event because they agree with Huckabee’s stance as an anti-abortion candidate and like the “fair tax plan.” They also said that if elected, he would bring needed change to Washington.
