SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Former President Bill Clinton, in a campaign stop Saturday night in Springfield, laid out his case for Democratic presidential hopeful, and his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, focusing on her ability to restore the country’s economy and standing in the world.

Cameras and Hillary signs held high, the crowd of about 2,500 people gave Clinton a wild welcome.

After thanking Missouri for voting for him in the past, he said: “You know people say you should discount what Bill says about Hillary. He represents the past. But the past wasn’t too bad.”

Clinton received a huge round of applause.

“Everyone was doing better.”

Clinton said his wife is the best-qualified person he will ever have an opportunity to vote for.

“They (opponents) say she will go back in the past. I say, she will get us back on our feet.”

He said Hillary Clinton would build the middle-class dream, reclaim the future for children, and get the politics out of science, referring to climate change and stem-cell research.

“Her No. 1 message is America’s back. She will restore our standing in the world,” said Bill Clinton.

He said the $120 billion America was spending on the war was enough to fund health care for every man woman and child in the nation.

Clinton, who campaigned earlier Saturday in Columbia, spoke to those gathered in the commons area of Central High School in Springfield.

Some stood in line for hours to see Clinton and show support for his wife’s candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination, and some remained in the line wrapping nearly around the school in an unsuccessful effort to see the former president.

About 1 1/2 hours before Clinton’s 9 p.m. appearance, the Secret Service used dogs in a security sweep of the building.
