Voters discuss reasons for choices

A steady stream of voters weathered the rain and thunderstorms Tuesday to vote in Missouri and Oklahoma primaries and to attend Kansas caucuses, with no clear favorites surfacing in the Globe’s exit polling.
Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee were the most-mentioned Republican candidates, and Hillary Clinton was cited most among Democrats, though many voters also threw support to Ron Paul, John McCain and Barack Obama.
Workers at polling places throughout the Tri-State Area said they saw a good turnout.
Missouri
Election workers at Peace Lutheran Church in Joplin clapped when they got their 100th voter before 9 a.m. Tuesday.
“We try to make it fun,” said Diana Fleischaker, an election worker at Joplin’s 24th Precinct polling place, 2002 S. Wisconsin Ave. “We even had three first-time voters.”
Election workers at the Joplin Senior Center, 22nd Street and Jackson Avenue, said they were seeing a steady line of voters. A total of 119 votes had been recorded shortly before 10 a.m.
“It’s real good,” said election worker Dana Hughey. “We had a man waiting on us at 5:30 a.m. to open, and by 6 a.m., we had a line.”
At Mary Lee’s Cafe, 712 1/2 W. 20th St., Joplin resident George Edwards and Duquesne resident Jack Eaton were having their daily breakfast chat.
Edwards was eating peanut butter on dry, white toast — “My power breakfast,” he said — before he went to vote.
“We have our coffee-shop politics here,” Eaton said over a plate of chicken fried steak slathered with white gravy and hash browns doused with ketchup. “We can get some good arguments going.”
There are more men who usually join Eaton and Edwards. “Most of our buddies must be voting because they aren’t here,” Edwards said.
Eaton said he would vote in the afternoon, while Edwards was heading to the Joplin Senior Center after breakfast.
