Clinton vs. Huckabee?

That’s the way local voters think it could play out in the race for the White House this fall.

New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was the leading choice among voters in the Democratic primaries Tuesday in seven Southwest Missouri counties and two Northeast Oklahoma counties.

She also held primary leads over Illinois Sen. Barack Obama across the states of Missouri and Oklahoma.

In Southeast Kansas, Democratic caucus participants were divided between Obama and Clinton in close races. Obama was the leading choice among Democrats across Kansas.

Other Democratic candidates, such as former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, also drew votes though they have dropped out of the race.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was the leading choice among voters in the Republican primaries in seven Southwest Missouri counties and two Northeast Oklahoma counties.

But Huckabee failed to carry Oklahoma, losing it to Arizona Sen. John McCain. The race in Missouri between Huckabee and McCain was too close to call late Tuesday night. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was running third in Missouri, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul was a distant fourth in Missouri and Oklahoma.

The Republican caucuses in Kansas will be held Saturday.

Missouri

n Jasper County: Clinton outpolled Obama nearly 2-to-1 among Democratic voters. Clinton received 4,604 votes, or more than 60 percent of the vote. Obama received 2,775 votes, or 36 percent. Edwards got 173 votes.

Huckabee was the winner among Republican candidates, with 5,226 votes, or 42 percent of the total. Romney received 3,246 votes, or just over 26 percent, and McCain got 3,220, or nearly 26 percent. Paul got 527 votes, and Rudy Giuliani received 71.

With 48 of 48 precincts reporting, about 20,000 voters — more than 27 percent of those registered — cast ballots.
