Obama field director to address Democrats By Susan Redden sredden@joplinglobe.com Democrats and other Barack Obama supporters from the region can hear from a field director for the presidential campaign at a meeting Monday sponsored by the Jasper County Central Democratic Committee. Tim Anderson will speak at a session set for 6:30 p.m. at the Laborers’ Union Hall at 20th Street and Empire Avenue, according to Susan DeCarlo, central committee chairwoman. She said Missouri is the focus of increased attention from the Obama campaign and that Joplin will be a headquarters for one of the regional campaign operations. “Missouri is a critical state and Obama is bringing more people in. The state will be divided into regions and Joplin will be headquarters for one of them.” John Putnam, chairman of the Jasper County Republican Committee, said the importance of Southwest Missouri in the presidential election already has been suggested on the GOP side by a Springfield visit recently by presumptive nominee John McCain. He said the GOP will name a field representative who will be responsible for coordinating campaign efforts in eight counties in Southwest Missouri, including the Joplin metro area. He said he had been told last week that the representative had yet to be named. DeCarlo said Democrats plan to implement a 50-state strategy designed by Howard Dean, 2004 presidential candidate, who is now chairman of the Democratic National Committee. “We should know a lot more about what we’re going to do after Monday, but it’s exciting,” she said. “This area always has been a satellite of Springfield, but now we’re getting more attention because of how good the turnout was for two years ago for Claire McCaskill,” who defeated Jim Talent to win a U.S. Senate post. She said the region that Anderson will oversee as field director is two counties wide, extending from the Arkansas border north to the suburbs of Kansas City. “There also will be some satellite offices,” she said. “Right now, we’re trying to firm up a headquarters location, but there’s nothing definite as of today. We’re looking for an office that can include space for the Nixon campaign,” she said, referring to Jay Nixon, attorney general, who is running for governor. The Obama campaign has announced plans to triple its staff in Missouri. With 150 paid workers, it will make it one of the largest Democratic campaign efforts in state history. The workers are to be placed in 30 field offices across the state. Obama buttons will be available at the Monday meeting, which is open to anyone who wants to get involved in the campaign, DeCarlo said. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
