Lions 7th, Gorillas 9th in PSU golf invitational

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Missouri Southern finished seventh among 13 teams at the Pittsburg State Invitational that ended Tuesday at Crestwood Country Club.

Washburn, led by medalist Sam Schulte, captured team honors in the first MIAA points tournament with a 591 total, six shots in front of league newcomer Central Oklahoma. Central Missouri was third at 601, followed by Lindenwood 604, Nebraska-Kearney 605 and Fort Hays State 608.

The Lions shot 614 with rounds of 305-309, followed by Northeastern State 616, Pittsburg State 618, Lincoln 619, Missouri Western 623, Southwest Baptist 626 and MSSU No. 2 628.

Ryan Buerk led the Lions with 76-75—151, good for a share of 15th place. Elliot Soyez and Ben Starkey each shot 155, and Gil Williams had 161. Andy Hogenmiller, after a first-round 73, was disqualified.

On the Lions’ No. 2 team, Andrew Maier shared Monday’s first-round lead with a 1-under-par 71 and wound up tied for 11th at 150 after a final-round 79.

Pittsburg State’s Justice Valdivia, who also shot 71 in the first round, closed with a 77 and tied for sixth with 148. Other PSU scores: Brett Dowell 156, Fletcher Harder 157, Cole Murrin 158 and Wes Kleinsorge 160.

Schulte and Dillon Rust of Central Oklahoma tied for first with par-144 totals, and Schulte won the playoff. Rust fired a 3-under-par 69 in the final round, one shot better than Schulte.
