PITTSBURG, Kan. —
Ryan Reddick’s two-out double to right-center field scored Chase Barnes with the winning run and Pittsburg State salvaged the second game of a doubleheader Monday by defeating Washburn 7-6 at Al Ortolani Field.
Washburn (4-6, 1-3 MIAA) slammed six home runs in the first game and defeated the Gorillas 17-1. Pittsburg State swept a pair of games from the Icabods on Saturday and won the four-game series 3-1.
The Gorillas (8-5, 6-2) trailed 6-5 going into the bottom of the ninth inning but tied the game on a two-out single by Evan Thomas that drove in pinch runner Tanner Bailey.
Thomas was 4-for-5 and drove in four runs. Barnes was 3-for-6 and scored three runs, and Ryan Bilovesky was 3-for-5 and scored twice.
Cody Wren (1-0) came into the game in the eighth inning and was the winning pitcher for PSU in relief of starter Dustin Ulrich. A. J. Green (0-1) took the loss.
In the first game, John Calhoun’s two-run home run in the first inning gave Washburn a 2-0 lead, and the Icabods added four runs in the second inning and six in the third.
The outburst included a solo home run by Richard Swan, a three-run shot by Calhoun, a solo home run by Swan, a three-run blast by Tyler Bean and a solo home run by Brad Alberts.
Washburn outhit the Gorillas 21-5. PSU’s only run came in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Adam Reed that scored Barnes.
The Gorillas face Rogers State at 1 p.m. today in a doubleheader at Al Ortolani Field.
