Pitt State missing two starters for trip to No. 21 Washburn

Pittsburg State could be missing two starters when the Gorillas battle No. 21 Washburn tonight at 7 at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan.

Senior forward JaVon McGee, the Gorillas’ No. 2 scorer (12.4 average) and No. 1 rebounder (7.4), will miss his second game with a dislocated right shoulder.

McGee, who reached 1,000 career points earlier this season, was injured when he was riding his bicycle back to his apartment after the Gorillas’ game at Northeastern State on Jan. 23.

“He was riding through a parking lot,” PSU coach Kevin Muff said. “He saw one car pulling into the lot, but he did not see another car backing out of a space, and he got hit in the side.

“We’re waiting on the official word (on how long McGee will be out). It’s week-to-week right now. It doesn’t look good, but we’re hoping.”

Courtney Ingram, the Gorillas’ third-leading scorer at 11.3 points per game, is questionable tonight after twisting an ankle in Wednesday night’s 57-56 victory at Missouri Western. His status is a game-time decision.

Freshman Jake Bullard continues to rehab a broken hand he suffered in a game against Lincoln on Jan. 10.

“He’s day-to-day, could be released (to play) at any time,” Muff said. “We need to get somebody back.”

The Gorillas (13-5, 7-4 MIAA) came up with defensive stops down the stretch to beat the Griffons. Rico Pierrevilus led PSU with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Also reaching double figures were Kaleb Porter (13), Marky Nolen (12) and Ingram (11).

“After three road losses, it’s good to go get one,” Muff said. “It’s a good win, for our psyche more than anything.”

Pittsburg State’s women face the No. 9 Lady Blues to tip off the doubleheader.

The Gorillas (13-6, 6-5) led most of Wednesday night’s game at Missouri Western before the Griffons went on a 10-0 run in the last five minutes to pull out a 70-65 victory.

Lizzy Jeronimus collected 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Gorillas, and Morgan Westhoff and Drew Roberts chipped in with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

PSU’s women will have fond memories tonight when they walk into Lee Arena — the site where they won the South Central Regional last March.
