PSU women win, men lose at Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. —  Pittsburg State battled back from a seven-point deficit early in the second half and trimmed Emporia State 63-60 Wednesday night in MIAA women’s basketball action.

Lizzy Jeronimus tallied 16 points to pace the Gorillas (16-7, 10-5 MIAA) to their seventh consecutive victory over the Lady Hornets and third straight in White Auditorium.

Jeronimus, who hit 7-of-12 field goals and 1-of-3 free throws, also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 37 minutes.

Guards Alexa Bordewick and Brigit Hesser contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Gorillas. Bordewick hit 4-of-6 shots from 3-point range, giving her three consecutive games with four treys, and Hesser grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Center Merissa Quick poured in 31 points for the Hornets (16-7, 11-4), who saw their nine-game winning streak end. Quick made 13-of-20 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the foul line and had eight rebounds.

Rachel Hanf added 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Hornets.

Hanf scored eight straight points — two treys and two free throws — to help the Hornets turn a 29-28 halftime deficit into a 38-31 lead with 14:49 remaining.

A Bordewick 3 and three-point play by Lauren Brown cut the deficit to one, and the Gorillas went ahead to stay when Bordewick’s 3 made it 45-42 with 9:34 left. The Hornets got within one in the last minute, and Quick missed a field goal in the waning seconds that would have tied the game.

The Gorillas, tied for sixth place in the league standings, have another road game Saturday afternoon at Central Oklahoma.

Emporia State men 88, Pittsburg State 82

Just as in Saturday night’s victory at Missouri Southern, Emporia State erased a halftime deficit with a strong-shooting second half.

The Hornets (12-11, 7-8 MIAA), shot 45 percent in the first half and 63 percent (17-of-27, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc) in the second half.

The Gorillas (15-8, 8-7) hit 42 percent (16-of-31) while building a 39-36 halftime lead but cooled to 40 percent (14-of-35) in the second half.

Freshman guard Kaleb Porter and senior forward JaVon McGee scored 21 and 20, respectively, for the Gorillas, and A.J. Adams had 16 before fouling out.

Guard Chris Sights made 11-of-15 field goals and 4-of-5 from long range while scoring a career-high 29 for the Hornets. Kaleb Wright added 13 points, Gavin Brown 12 and Paul Bunch 11.
