Hope Joyner gives verbal commitment to play volleyball at PSU

Hope Joyner, a two-sport standout at Carl Junction High School, has decided to continue her volleyball career at Pittsburg State University.

Joyner, who will be a senior this fall, was named to the Class 3 all-state second team last year by the Missouri High School Volleyball Coaches Association. She also qualified for the state track meet in the 100-meter hurdles last spring.

“I decided to commit with Pittsburg State because their coach (Ibraheem Suberu) is phenomenal and a great guy,” Joyner said. “I feel I can become the greatest volleyball player I can be there because they’ll push me.”

Joyner said she wants to major in marketing with a minor in photography and plans to operate her own marketing firm. In the meantime, she plans to compete in track and field next spring in the 100-meter hurdles, triple jump and shot put.

Her volleyball coach, Sarah Wall, also coaches her in the hurdles.

“Here’s the thing with Hope,” Wall said. “As an eighth grader, I never thought I would see Hope on the varsity volleyball court. She has worked so hard. She has such a bright attitude about what it takes to help her team.

“I coached her sister (Katelyn), so she’s more than one of my athletes,” Wall said. “She’ll always have a special place in my heart. We’re so excited for her and we’ll get to watch her for the next four years.

“Hope Joyner is the hardest working athlete I have ever coached. I’ve been coaching for 25 years. She never takes time to relax and that is why she is where she is today.”
