Turnovers cost Gorillas in first loss of season

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Pittsburg State Gorillas men’s basketball team committed 29 turnovers in a 89-79 loss to Newman on Tuesday night at John Lance Arena.

Pitt State (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season despite a 26-point effort from Kaleb Porter.

Bobby Wesley led Newman (3-0) with 20 points. Darrell Traylor recorded six steals, while Wesley posted four as the Jets totaled 15 as a team.

Newman committed only 17 turnovers compared to Pitt State’s 29.

The Gorillas never held a lead. They trailed 45-38 at the half and by as many as 20 points at the 11:54 mark of the second half. Pitt State cut the lead to 80-72 with 2:59 remaining and again at the 1:13 mark, but the Gorillas couldn’t come any closer.

Newman’s Marquis Cuyler added 14 points, and Frankie Drayton scored 11.

Pitt State’s Courtney Ingram contributed 18 points. JaVon McGee and A.J. Adams recorded 12 and 10, respectively.

The Gorillas will be at home against Southwestern at 3 p.m. Saturday.
