Pitt State women finish 24th

Pittsburg State tied for 23rd place Saturday morning in the NCAA Division II women’s cross country championships at the Missouri Southern course.

The Gorillas and Stonehill each scored 544 points, 10 behind Ferris State and 15 ahead of Tampa.

“Actually we did pretty well,” Gorillas coach Russ Jewett said. “We had a couple of physical problems with about two kilometers to go with a couple of our girls, but we had some other girls step up and pick up the slack.

“We were tied for 23rd overall, and our goal was top 25 coming in. The national meet, any little problem is magnified. We could have been higher probably, but I was proud of our girls for fighting in the middle of the race to put ourselves in a position to achieve the goal that we had, and we did that.”

Senior Kaley Temaat was the Gorillas’ first finisher, crossing  in 89th place in 22:05 for 6K. Sophomore Alex Moase was next in 22:26, placing 110th.

PSU’s other finishes: sophomore Bridgette McCormick (No. 134, 22:40), sophomore Cate Dunn (No. 143, 22:43), junior Casey Epps (No. 172, 22:58), freshman Hannah DeVries (No. 199, 23:28) and senior Amanda Callaway (No. 206, 23:35).
