In a record-breaking season, the Pittsburg State women will try for another first tonight.
The Gorillas will face Emporia State in the championship round of the NCAA Division II South Central Region at Washburn’s Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
The winner earns a berth in the Elite Eight in San Antonio, which begins on March 20.
Pitt State (26-5) owns a pair of wins over the Hornets (23-8) this seasons. The Gorillas topped Emporia State 66-60 on the road on Jan. 7 and then beat the Hornets 49-42 at home on Feb. 15.
The Gorillas reached the title game with contrasting wins. They let a 19-point halftime lead disappear before holding on to beat Central Missouri 74-70 on Friday — their first ever NCAA tournament win — before pulling away for a relatively east 68-54 win against Northeastern State on Saturday.
Emporia State beat Tarleton State 64-56 in the first round before avenging three losses to Washburn with a 71-65 win on Saturday.
The Hornets have won eight straight NCAA tournament games dating back to their national title run in 2010.
