CARL JUNCTION, Mo. —
Senior Chase Marrs, a stalwart on the mound as well as the plate for the Carl Junction High School baseball team, signed a letter of intent on Thursday with Pittsburg State University.
The right-handed Marrs has helped Flave Darnell’s Bulldogs post a 15-9 record entering Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. game against the fourth-seeded host in the Class 4 District 12 Tournament at Republic.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Marrs is 5-1 with a 1,69 ERA as a pitcher. He’s struck out 42 and walked 22 in 411⁄3 innings. Marrs, also an outfielder, is hitting .338 on 25 of 74 with eight doubles, a home run and 23 RBI. He’s tied with Nathan Skaggs for the team lead in RBI.
PSU of the MIAA hasn’t named a successor to retiring Steve Bever, Marrs noted. Marrs would like to see a Bever assistant, Daniel Esposito, guiding the Gorillas.
“Coach Esposito recruited me,” Marrs said. “Hopefully, he’ll get the job.
“I’m not sure about the position,” Marrs said. “Coach Esposito wants me to pitch and also try out in the field.
“Pitching is my favorite position,” Marrs said. “I like being involved on every pitch.”
Marrs made the Big 8 Conference elite this season and last as a pitcher (second team) and outfielder (first team).
Marrs averaged .433 with three homers and 37 RBI for the 2011 edition (21-7). On the hill, he was 7-0 with a 1.55 ERA.
Said Darnell: “It’s great opportunity for Chase. They (PSU) came to see him pitch and they liked what they saw.
“He has a chance to become a really good player,” Darnell said. “It’s been fun to watch him grow as a person as well as a player and that will continue at PSU.”
Chase, unsure of a major, is the son of Gina and Chad Marrs.
Marrs gives the current Bulldogs a second NCAA Division II signee. Payton Walker, a left-handed pitcher⁄outfielder, signed early with Missouri Southern State University.
