Gorilla men grab opening win

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Rico Pierrevilus took care of the first half. A.J. Adams and Kaleb Porter teamed to take over the second half.

Combined, the trio helped the Pittsburg State Gorillas open their season with an 88-67 win over the Baker Wildcats on Tuesday night at John Lance Arena.

Pierrevilus — a 6-foot-7 senior forward — scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. He hit all seven of his first-half shots for 18 points.

Porter and Adams each had 16 points, and the duo combined for 25 second-half points as the Gorillas held off a late Baker rally.

Pitt State led by 19 with 11:59 to play before Baker (3-2) used a 17-5 run to pull within 61-54 on Corey Anderson’s three-point play.

But Adams and Porter combined to scored the game’s next seven points and the Gorillas cruised from there.

Adams had a double-double, adding 10 rebounds to his 16 points. Pierrevilus narrowly missed one with nine rebounds.

JaVon McGee and freshman Jake Bullard had nine and eight points, respectively, for the Gorillas.

Baker was led by Anderson and E.J. Carter, who each scored 12. Brandon Moore added 10 points.

Pitt State returns to action on Friday at noon when the Gorillas face Lincoln at the Freeman Sports Medicine Chris Tucker Classic at Missouri Southern.
