HAYS, Kan. —
The Pittsburg State Gorillas scored twice in the top of the 10th to win 9-7 and complete the series upset of Central Missouri in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Sunday at Fort Hays State’s Larks Park.
The Gorillas (28-22) won the series 2-1 and advance to CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan., for the final four of the tournament, where they’ll face third-seeded Missouri Southern.
Central Missouri — 35-12 and ranked fourth nationally — entered Sunday with a 62-11 lead in the all-time series against Pitt State.
But the Gorillas, behind the strength of 17 hits, came out on top.
Cody Ball and Luke Bordewick singled to lead off the top of the 10th. Samuel Falcon pinch-ran for Ball and, along with Bordewick, advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch.
Austin Lastimado’s one-out single through a drawn-in infield then scored both runs.
That was enough for Ryan McKay, who sat the Mules down in order to earn the win after his 2 2/3 innings in relief of Cody Wren, who pitched into the eighth.
The Gorillas led 7-4 before UCM struck for three runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Mules had the go-ahead run at third with two out, but McKay forced a grounder to escape.
Brad Foss was 3-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI for Pitt State while Evan Thomas was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Bordewick and Ryan Bilovesky each hit home runs for the Gorillas.
Joplin High graduate Barrett Norfalise continued his solid series by going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run for Central Missouri.
The Mules must now wait for Sunday’s NCAA selection show to learn the fate of their season.
