7 Lions, 8 Gorillas names all-MIAA

— Seven Missouri Southern Lions and eight Pittsburg State Gorillas have been named to the MIAA’s all-conference baseball team, it was announced Thursday.

Three Lions were named to the second team — starting pitcher Brett Abell, catcher Sam Ryan and second baseman Michael McCoy. Honorable mention went to starting pitchers Ryan Bates and Payton Walker, outfielder Will Wagner and utility player Dallas Burke.

Pittsburg State starting pitcher Matt Stalcup was a first-team selection, and reliever Ryan McKay, catcher Jacoby Martin, first baseman Ryan Bilovesky, third baseman Brad Foos and outfielders Ryan Ventura and Tory Stoffregen received honorable mention.

Regular-season champion Missouri Western had five first-team choices, including pitcher of the year Brandon Simmons (10 wins, 2.80 earned run average) and player of the year Michael Schulze (shortstop with a .445 average and 63 runs scored). The Griffons’ Buzz Verduzco was named coach of the year.

Nebraska-Kearney outfielder Anthony Pacheco was freshman of the year.
