PITTSBURG, Kan. —
The Pittsburg State Gorillas shot 63 percent from the field, had four players score in double figure and rolled to a season-opening 97-51 win over Southwest Minnesota on Friday in the PSU Tipoff Classic at John Lance Arena.
The Gorillas (1-0) hit 41 of their 65 shots from the field — including 9-of-15 from behind the arc — and were 6-of-8 from the foul line.
Sophomore Morgan Westhoff came off the bench and led the Gorillas with 17 points, going 7-of-10 from the field. Classmate Lizzy Jeronimus was also 7-for-10 and finished with 15 points and five rebounds.
Seniors Drew Roberts (13) and Lauren Brown (12) combined for 25 points. Brown was 6-for-7 from the field while pulling down five rebounds. Sophomore Hailey Roderique had eight points, five rebounds and a game-high five steals.
The Gorillas got 43 points from its bench, including 29 in the second half, when Pitt State began pulling away from a 41-32 halftime lead.
The 6-foot-6 Brown led Pitt State’s inside game, which outscored Southwest Minnesota 48-18 in the paint.
Southwest Minnesota (0-1) was led by Rebekah Rolling’s 13 points while Bree Holleman and Annessa Rosch each added 11.
The Gorillas face Mary today at 3 p.m.
