BLOG: Every baseball game could be THE game

Every once in a while, someone will ask me why I like baseball so much.

There are plenty of reasons I can give. I love the strategy, the game within the game and the intrigue that comes with each pitch.

I respect the ability required to play the game well. It takes the right mix of athleticism and skill that few of us possess.

I love going to the ball park in the summer and enjoying the game with a bag of peanuts and a cold beer.

But I think what I love most is the possibility of seeing greatness.

Each time I attend a baseball game, I always enter the gates with the hope that this may be the day I see a three-home run game, someone hit for the cycle, a no-hitter, or even a perfect game.

The thing about baseball is that you never know when these great things are going to happen. It could be in the playoffs or the World Series, but it’s more than likely to occur in a run-of-the-mill regular season game that appears no different than the others.

Then you look up and notice that no hits have been allowed through the first five innings. Then six and seven and so on …

This is the way it went Tuesday night for baseball fans at Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park. With the stadium not quite two-thirds full, 27,000 were in attendance to see Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey register the second no-hitter of his career.

These fans cashed in on the baseball lottery so to speak and will enjoy that memory for a lifetime.

I’ve attended countless major league and minor league games over the years, but I’ve never witnessed a no-hitter.

Who knows though? The next one may be the one, or at least I can hope.
