The Area Agency on Aging Region X is currently looking for volunteers to donate their time to the Silver Haired Legislature and Area Agency on Aging advisory board.
What is the Silver Haired Legislature? The Silver Haired Legislature is composed of citizens, age 60 or order that volunteered their time to advocate on behalf of Missouri’s older adults.
The delegates are elected from each of Missouri’s 10 Area Agencies on Aging. Each delegation consists of three senators and 12 representatives, for a statewide total of 150 legislatures. All legislators meet annually for a two-day model legislative session at the state capitol in Jefferson City. At this time, SHL legislators debate and vote upon their top five priority proposals. Once the five priorities are chosen, the legislators return to their districts to encourage support of those issues. They testify before the Missouri Senate and House and speak with senior groups regarding those issues.
Members of our advisory board meet on a quarterly basis at our Joplin office. Members of our board bring knowledge of what’s going on in the community and how best we can provide for the seniors in our area. Participation in fundraising for the agency would be appreciated.
If you are interested in pursuing either opportunity, please don’t hesitate to give the Area Agency on Aging a call at 417-781-7562.
