Dave Woods:Online comments percolate over alleged plot

Shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, joplinglobe.com posted breaking news that several Riverton High School students had been arrested in an alleged plot to carry out a Columbine-like assault at the school. This story, and those on the subjects that followed, fueled a storm of comments online. Here are a few of the more than 60 comments that were posted online by late afternoon Friday at www.joplinglobe.com.
Blame the parents
"This is simple! Charge the parents. They raised these kids or were supposed to!"

"Mike, a little simplistic, perhaps? Charge the parents? You obviously don't remember what it was like to be a 16-year-old boy, and don't have one of your own. Kids can be secretive to a degree that their parents have no idea what's going on in their lives. It's easy to point fingers randomly. It is entirely too early to be blaming the parents."

"How can a kid hide a large number of firearms in his room without being noticed by parents? When I was a kid I couldn't keep a can of Skoal in my room without being busted by good ol' mom & dad. Parents should be held responsible when weapons are being stored on their property."

"Parents can't raise their kids now days. You can't punish them for things they do wrong, or you will be charged with child abuse. I disciplined my children anytime they needed it, and they grew up just fine. Society needs to get rid of these laws that allows these juvenile delinquents to do whatever they wish without consequences, and I don't mean a slap on the wrist for a serious crime."
